New BVI Rotary Club to Engage in Hands-on Projects

Road Town, Tortola - April 27th, 2009: President of the Rotary Club Sunrise of Road Town, Monica Ramgeet, has said that the focus of the new Club will be on hands-on projects in partnership with the rest of the Rotary family in the Virgin Islands.
She made the announcement on Saturday as she was officially inducted as the first President of the third Rotary Club in the territory. The Charter Presentation and Installation Celebration was held at the Treasure Isle Hotel and was attended by His Excellency Governor David Pearey, Premier Honourable Ralph T. O'Neal, Rotary 7020 District Governor Rupert Ross Jr., Members of the House of Assembly, Rotarians from St. Croix and members of the visiting Australian Rotary Group Study Exchange GSE Programme.
President Monica said she was proud to accept the challenge to lead this highly energized Club, made up of twenty three business professionals, whose classifications range from resort and real estate management to general law and medical practice, communications, accounting and banking.
"We now have a new cadre of leaders to help make dreams real," she said. "This new Club gives us more opportunities for service and the focus will be on hands-on projects. We will partner with the Rotary family, including the other two Rotary Clubs, Rotaract and Interact Clubs, and other non profit organizations to benefit this community. We also intend to reach out to Virgin Gorda, Anegada and Jost Van Dyke."
In his remarks, DG Rupert was full of praise for the Rotary organization in the BVI as he congratulated the members of the new Club for taking "this bold and historic step". He noted that the BVI has the highest number of Rotarians per capita in District 7020, which comprises 64 Clubs in ten Caribbean countries and territories, including Jamaica, Haiti, The Bahamas, Cayman Islands, French West Indies, Netherland Antilles, Turks and Caicos, Anguilla and the Virgin Islands.
DG Rupert and Assistant District Governor Vance Lewis presided over the installation of the 23 charter members of the Rotary Club Sunrise of Road Town. Board members include Vice President Laura Hunte-Arthur; Secretary Christy Almeida; Treasurer Nayada Henry; Sergeant-at-Arms Richard Arthur and Directors - Maxwell George (Membership), Micheal Thomas (Service Projects), Donna Farmer-Arter (The Rotary Foundation), Alan Bates (Public Relations) and Corleen Goodman (Club Administration).
Saturday's ceremony was chaired by Rotarian Gerard Farara, the invocation was done by Rev. Edris O'Neal and President of the Rotary Club of Road Town Stephanie Benn brought congratulatory remarks.
The new Rotary Club Sunrise of Road Town was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Road Town, which was sponsored almost 20 years ago by the Rotary Club of Tortola. The new Club meets Tuesdays 7am at Maria's By The Sea Restaurant.
