The Rotary Club Sunrise of Road Town has started Rotary Year 2010-2011 with great excitement.

On Friday, members of the group, along with friends and family, visited Anegada for fun and fellowship; touring the island and enjoying lunch and beach volleyball at Loblolly Bay, leading up to today´s first meeting of the new Rotary year.

President Ken Guiste opened the meeting with an enthusiastic introduction and the air was filled with pure delight.

Rotarian David Archer made mention of the Rotary Friends & Family August Festival Parade troupe. There was a recap on the fellowship in Anegada by Rotarian Daniele Ellis, followed by messages from District Governor Diana White and President Ken Guiste read quotes from RI President Ray Klinginsmith. There was also an announcement that Team Sunrise 7020 - a group of Sunrise clubs in District 7020 will be working together on future projects.

Visiting from the UK, Rotarian Geoff Holt, MBE presided as the Guest Speaker. He discussed his recent visit to BVI House in the UK, receiving his honorary Belongership and his possible future plans to increase health and disability awareness in the BVI. At the presentation, he proudly displayed his double Paul Harris Fellow pin adorned with a sapphire, and compared it with past President Monica Ramgeet´s Paul Harris pin, which is adorned with a ruby. "I have a long way to go to catch up to you", Geoff declared. He concluded by announcing possible plans to become the first disabled person to sail around the world solo.

In 2009/10, Geoff became the first quadriplegic to sail the Atlantic Ocean unassisted in all aspects of the sailing. He currently sits on the National RYA Council, representing disabled sailors in the UK and also sits on the Paralympic Steering Group which is responsible for finding our Paralympic sailors for 2012. Geoff is also a committee member of the British Paralympic Association, representing sailing in the UK.

In 2004 he was awarded the RYA Award for "Services to Yachting", in 2007 he won the BBC South Sports Personality of the Year and in 2009 he was awarded the RYA´s Francis Elkin Award for "Services to Disabled Sailing".

The Rotary Club Sunrise of Road Town looks forward to serving local and regional communities as part of its dedication to Building Communities and Bridging Continents.
