Our weekly meeting began in high spirits on the heels of a very successful Games Night on Saturday (the pictures in the attached bulletin speak volumes!).  We were a rather large gathering of Sunrise Rotarians, visiting Rotarians and guests, totalling 30 in number.  In our midst were the top five performing students of the Primary Five examination - affectionately dubbed the “Fab Five”- accompanied by their parents.  Director Marvin must be commended for shining the spotlight on youth achievement.

President Ken chaired the meeting whilst Rotarian Shirley delivered the Hospitality Report.  Rotary Sunrise responded in usual fashion to a request to assist residents of Purcell Estate who were displaced by the flash flood over the weekend.

Our guest speakers, Alison Knights Bramble and Lorna Dawson gave a sobering yet inspiring account of the achievements of a remarkable young man, Delroy Gordon, who is hearing impaired but continues to astound those around him with all he has accomplished as a sailor and eager student without formal training or education tailored to his special needs.  Alison and Lorna appealed to the club to assist with the funding necessary to give Delroy the basic educational opportunities from which he could greatly benefit.  Although there were no questions asked of the speakers, it was clear that their message hit home and President Ken gave assurances that the matter will be followed up by the Board.

Perhaps SAA Heskith sensed that we were still in the mood for giving, having raised a healthy amount with our white elephant auction held during Games Night, as he cut his fining session short after levying only a few strategic penalties and opened the floor to Happy Dollars.  Indeed, we were a “Happy Club” with unprecedented contributions in honour of the Fab Five and various other reasons to celebrate.  Of particular note was Director Vincent’s opening donation to the Deloy Gordon Fund which was quickly supported by Director Jean, President Ken and other benevolent Rotarians.  Notwithstanding Rotarian Omonike’s “audacious” happy dollar put forth because of SAA’s Heskith’s decision to forego his weekly joke, this Rotarian looks forward with great anticipation to the return of the SAA’s comedy minute next week.

Have a great week and remember to sponsor the bulletin in acknowledgement of something or someone special!
